Ok, so I just feel like sharing something more serious today. In fact, this was my report awhile ago for class. It's about Business Ethics and Security. :)

Oh and enjoy this video on phishing from Common Craft. Common Craft loves explaining tidbits using cut outs. Very adorable.

It is without doubt that the use of information technology in business presents major security challenges, poses serious ethical questions, and affects society in significant ways. In as much as technology has tried to better societies in making more efficient and effective systems, still there are some technologies cause notorious breaks and of which add up to more costs than they reap benefits.
For example, computerizing a manufacturing process may have the beneficial result of improving working conditions and producing products of higher quality at less cost, but also have the adverse effect of sliminating people’s jobs.
As a manager or business professional, we should be able to invlve managing work activities and those of others to minimize the detrimental effects of business applications of information technology and to optimize their beneficial effects.
Business ethics is concerned with the numerous ethical questions that managers must confront as part of their daily business decision making. The issues of intellectual property, rights, customer and employee privacy, security and company records, and workplace safety are highlighted because they are major areas of ethical controversy in information technology.
There are four (4) basic principles of technology ethics:
1) Proportionality. The good achieved by the technology must outweigh the harm or risk. Moreover, there must be no alternative that achieves the same or comparable benefits with less harm or risk.
2) Informed Consent. Those affected by the technology should understand and accept the risks.
3) Justice. The benefits and burdens of technology should be fairly distributed. Those who benefit should bear their fair share of risks, and those who do not benefit should not suffer a significant increase in risk.
4) Minimized Risk. Even in judged acceptable by the other three guidelines, the technology must be implemented so as to avoid all unnecessary risk.
These principles that can serve as basic ethical requirements that companies should meet to help ensure the ethical implementation of information technologies and information systems in business. It helps managers evaluate the potential harms or risks of the use of new technologies.
In addition, business and IS professionals would live up to their ethical responsibilities by voluntarily following guidelines:
- You can be a responsible professional by
- acting with integrity
- increasing your professional competence
- setting high standards of personal performance
- accepting responsibility for your work
- advancing health, privacy, and general welfare of the public
In so doing, you would be demonstrating ethical conduct, avoiding computer crime, and increasing the security of any information system you develop or use.
